the ramblings of a 21 year old
I've been um-ing and ah-ing about purchasing an acupressure mat since November last year. They always intrigued me. I had read lots of interesting reviews and they were constantly popping up as instagram or facebook advertisements.
After talking to some friends and fellow endosisters about their experiences with them, I purchased one myself.
Here are some of the benefits that an acupressure mat could give you:
The main reason I was put off buying one was the price. A locally branded one was around $70 for just the mat. As a broke, sick gal, I wasn't prepared to spend that much money on something that might not work for me. However, when I brought this up with Hannah (my best friend) she told me that I could buy an off brand one for about half the price from TradeMe (NZ version of Amazon?)
So that's what I did. For $30NZD I brought my very own acupressure mat and pillow! the best part about it was the fast shipping! It arrived the morning after I ordered it.
My initial reaction was that it was a lot sharper than I was expecting it to be. I don't know why I didn't expect it to be so sharp but it surprised me. I tested the mat by standing on it with socks on but found that it wasn't intense enough. I took my socks off and stood on it without. It wasn't painful or uncomfortable at all. I really enjoyed the sensation actually!
Before bed that night I tried lying on it on my back. It was a little uncomfortable to start but once you relax into it, it becomes enjoyable.
So I've been using my mat every day for a week now and I love it. Yes, it's not the most relaxing thing in the world but I do see some benefits from it. I usually use my mat before I go to bed and I've noticed my sleep has gotten a bit better (coincidence? Placebo? Magic of the mat? IDK.) I do feel a lot less tense when I get off the mat. This has been great because I get pretty bad back pain from hunching when I have cramps. I find the only place I get most uncomfortable is my lower back/tail bone and around my pelvis region when I'm lying on my stomach. Apparently this is because it's where I hold the most tension.
Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the mat and will be continuing to use it every day. I absolutely love standing on it. It gives your body a warm fuzzy feeling which is amazing! For someone who is pretty apprehensive in having faith that things like this will help them, I think it's doing a damn good job at convincing me.
